AFL RULES
Mission Statement: The “Strategy over Skillz” mantra was created to illustrate a mentality that all members possess. True to life football fundamentals, sportsmanship, and the desire to “play the right way” are paramount to the MADDEN AFL mentality. This league is based on trying to do our best to play football, not a video game.
Scheduling Information and Rules
- Standard weekly advancement period: This league will advance every 72 hours. If games are completed before 72 hours, the league will be advanced as soon as a commish can advance the league. If the league advances 24 hours early, the new week will begin at that point and the 72 hour count will begin. If the league advances less than 24 hours early, the 72 hour window will not begin until the original period has ended
- 24 hour rule: All members must communicate with their opponent within 24 hours of the league advancing. Acceptable communicaton:PSN/MADDE AFL FORUM

Gameplay Rules
1. “No Switch Rule” – no member is permitted to switch players when the ball is in the air. User catching is only permitted if the member controls the defender pre-snap.
2. QB Drop back Depth – do not drop back past 10 yards under any circumstance. If there is pressure, escape right/left/middle.
3. Lead passing – do not lead pass on ANY seam/fly route that changes the seam into a post or corner.
4. Run with integrity – if a running play is designed to run inside the tackles, run it inside the tackles. Bouncing inside runs to the outside are an exploit. Also please see video of Zig Zag running for clarification on that issue.
5a. Play variety – Offense: Vary your runs, vary your formations, and vary your routes. Do not resort to go-to plays every single third down. We all have tendencies, but let’s open up the playbook for this league.
5b. Play variety – Defense: Vary your coverage, vary your formations, and vary your blitzes. If you have a team built for man coverage you can run man the majority of the game, but you can’t adjust your DB’s to press all game and can’t have it as a go-to defense on 3rd down all game long. You can press, but use it in moderation.
6. Juke/Spin in wide open space – do not perform jukes or spins in open space (~10 yards away from defender) in an attempt to put the defenders into an animation where they are fooled. This is an exploit. Juking in the open field with a defender closing in on you is OK!
Any open team would do
7. 4th Downs – teams are expected to let the game situation dictate their 4th down decision making. It is very easy to check out 4th down statistics and believe they will be monitored.
8. Abusing CPU AI – do not try to hide offensive superstars in formations to place them against an inferior defender. The AI in Madden is lacking and it is difficult to combat. Once in a while this will happen. It should not become a habit. This is extremely important against the CPU.
9. Playmaker – this feature is not permitted in this league.
10. Nano blitzes – they have no place in this league.
11. Quick snapping – Do not snap the ball immediately once the QB is under center UNLESS you are up against the play clock. Give the defense a second or two to get set. If you see the defense making an adjustment to where a DB is running across the field to get set, don’t snap the ball to take advantage of this.
12. Quick throws – Do not get rid of the football before a 3-step drop UNLESS there is a defender right in your face about to hit the QB. If there is no pressure on the QB, do not get rid of the football before the QB’s 3-5-7 step drop is completed.
* If you have any questions about the rules just ask!
13. Defense must rush a minimum of three (3) defenders on every play with the exception of a Hail Mary situation.
Positional Rules
1. Interchangeable positions:
* TE/FB (TE can play at fullback, fullback can play at TE)
* OL (any OL can be put as center, guard, tackle)
* DT/DE (DT can play as DE, DE can play as DT)
* DE/OLB (DE can play as OLB, OLB can play as DE)
* LB (any LB can be put at any LB position)
* CB/Safety (CB can play as Safety, Safety can play as CB)
2. A FB can be put in at HB, but a HB may not be put as a FB
3. WR’s may not line up in the backfield
4. You may put a TE at WR through formation subs and/or package substitutions
Sportsmanship vs Members
1. Calling out somebody publicly will not be tolerated. If you have any issues come straight to me and I will handle things.
2. Do not run up the score, period. Zero toleration for this because it is extremely disrespectful. Here are some “rough” guidelines:
* Up by 25+ points (4 scores) in the 4th: do not stretch the field with your passing game and only pass if you really need to. If you break a run wide open use your best judgment. Do not keep your starting HB in there to rack up XP in a blowout.
* Up by 17+ points (3 scores) with less than 6 minutes remaining in the 4th: do not stretch the field passing. If you have a wide open field on a run move the chains and get a first down, keep grinding the clock.
* BOTTOM LINE: play with respect for your opponent! This is the most important rule of the league.
3. Communicate with your opponent and do not miss your scheduled time! If you are not able to make it, give your opponent a heads up. That can be forgiven. Standing your opponent up will not be!
Sportsmanship vs CPU
1. Do not run up the score, period.
2. Do not be an “XP Chaser” and try to put up ridiculous numbers in blowouts.
3. Do not break gameplay rules against the CPU. This is strictly an honor code situation.
4. Do not restart a game against the CPU. The CPU on All-Madden is legit and if you lose take it like a man.
5. The same scoring rules apply to the CPU.
Trading Guidelines
1. No member is permitted to trade with the CPU
2. Each member is allotted ONE trade during the season and TWO trades in the offseason
3. Trades may be a combination of the following:
* Single player for single player
* Pick(s) for pick(s)
* Single player for pick(s)
* Single player + single pick for pick(s)
* Single player + pick for single player+ pick
4. Players who can’t be traded:
* Rookies
* Players in the 1st year of their contract. (This eliminates sign & trade situations)
5. All trades must be APPROVED by the trade committee. Members must submit their trade proposals via PM on OS or PSN to get approved. Do not post a trade in public until it has been approved.
Contract Guidelines
1. All contracts that are longer than 2 years in length or have a total value exceeding $3.00M, a signing bonus of 25% must be applied to the contract.
EXAMPLE: 3-year deal for $3.00M base and $1.00M bonus = VALID contract. Base + Bonus = $4.00M. Bonus($1.00M)/$4.00M = 25%.
**If you have any questions about a contract you are going to offer please ask around before you hit submit. Contracts that do not conform to the guidelines will cause an automatic dropping of that player. The team who made the mistake will have to suffer the cap penalty.
2. Length of deals: you may not offer more contract years to a player than they are asking for.
EXAMPLE: QB Tom Brady wants a 4-year deal. You may offer him a deal between 1-4 years. If you offer him a 5-year deal and he accepts it you will eat the cap penalty when you drop him for failing to comply with the rule.
